After last year’s A-Z Blogging Challenge came to a close, I found myself missing the daily prompts and the routine and structure that came from dedicating time to write every day. I wrote a conclusion post of sorts after this challenge wrapped up which included a question for readers, eliciting advice regarding other challenges and prompts that are out there, asking fellow bloggers to suggest their favorites.
A number of writers highly recommended the Flash Fiction Challenge at Carrot Ranch Communications, which consists of a weekly flash fiction prompt in which you write a 99 word (no more, no less) post based off the provided prompt, submitting it to the Carrot Ranch page by noon every Tuesday.
I figured I’d give it a shot. To say that I fell in love with this challenge is a gross understatement. As the title of my blog tells you, I am verbose. I typically start out writing a piece with a severe case of verbal diarrhea and then chop as needed. When I first started participating, I certainly had my reservations. 99 words?! That would most definitely be challenge for me, but certainly something I felt I could benefit from.
And benefit I did! Not only do these weekly blog posts force me to break out of my comfort zone and say more with less, I have met so many fantastic fellow writers and have truly loved being a part of this amazing little community that Charli Mills has created. The support and encouragement, feedback and advice, camaraderie and friendships, and countless conversations we have every week are truly invaluable.
As a result of my participation throughout 2015 in the Flash Fiction Challenge, I have been inducted into the Congress of Rough Writers and am absolutely elated to be included with this group of amazing bloggers and writers. I admire and look up to so many of them and to be a part of this group is a true honor. If this isn’t encouragement enough to stick with a routine of regular writing and participation, I don’t know what is!
I look forward to participating in many upcoming weekly blog posts, contests, and additional projects and anthologies Charli and her amazing team of Editors manage. Thank you to everyone who recommended this challenge, it has proven to be a fantastic experience! 🙂
