Essential Oils – Giving it a Go!

A close friend of mine has been raving about the health and wellness benefits of essential oils for months now and has had some great experiences after implementing oils into her daily life. Always willing to try something new, I decided to give this a shot and am optimistic that I will reap the health benefits myself.

I have suffered from debilitating migraines for over a decade. I have tried nearly every prescription medication (and non) out there and got to the point a few years back where I was taking far more than the daily recommended dosage. Not only incredibly unhealthy and dangerous, but my body had built an immunity.

As my husband and I prepare to start our family (and as I grow older… *sniffs*) I find myself being more acutely aware of what I’m putting into and around my body. Some of these changes are little things, like wanting to wear more comfortable shoes versus 5 inch heels and opting for clean versus convenient eating.

Other modifications such as what cleaners I use in my home and what medications I choose for not only myself but my household are those that affect everyone around me. I realized that I should be just as cognizant about what I use on a daily basis as I am about what I use on a more sporadic or as needed basis.

I was hemming and hawing over whether or not to take the plunge and give this a shot. Depending on what you get, oils can get pricey. But my migraine meds are NOT cheap either, nor are the other more “toxic” products I used to (some I still) use.

At the end of the day, I want to be healthier and want to create a home that is safe and comfortable for my family. I’m still debating if I want to attempt to “sell” these oils and make some extra dough on the side. I have a number of girlfriends who have their own businesses (Scentsy, cosmetics, oils, etc.), and they all seem to enjoy it for the most part. I’ve never given this kind of home based business a try, nor had I ever given it much thought. My parents were a part of a number of “network marketing” businesses when I was growing up, so I’m certainly familiar with the concept, but never really considered participating in anything remotely similar until now.

Have you ever used essential oils for personal or home use? What have you tried? Have you had good experiences with them? Additionally, have you ever given a “home based business” of some kind a try? What was your experience like? Worth exploring or no?

  1. Lavender oil is essential to my life. In the bath, before bed, a tube in my purse for calming.
I got in on the candle craze in the 90’s. The company messed up my order, and I dealt with a lot of upset people for weeks and weeks until it was sorted out. I’ll never do home sales again. But that’s me 🙂

    1. Lavender is my fave!! We had oodles of it at our wedding 🙂

Still debating if I even want to bother doing sales myself. I’ll definitely wait and see how the oils work out for me and my family first.

  2. I love essential oils. I’ve actually been meaning to build my collection back up again. Niaouli oil in particular has helped me tremendously through a lot of mean throat and sinus infections. I used to have a light bulb ring diffuser for my old bedside lamp and it was one of the best purchases I ever made (curse my new lamp and its energy-efficient bulbs for rendering the diffuser useless!).

As for the home business aspect, personally I would pass. I have several friends who are trying or have tried it with various products, and while they all love what they’re selling, the general consensus seems to be that it’s a lot of stress for very little payoff. The only one who’s seen any kind of success has only managed to do so by becoming a walking infomercial. She’s one of the nicest people I know, but I actively avoid her now because she can’t go five minutes without slipping one of her products into the conversation or trying to recruit you.

    1. I’m really excited to start using them for ailments (allergies, cold/sinus bugs, headaches and migraines, indigestion, etc.)! I definitely plan on using the diffuser in our room when I go to bed feeling X way.

I’m leaning towards no for that exact reason. Friends of mine who are in these types of business are one of two ways. They are “if you’re interested let me know” and that is that, which is awesome. Or they are like the person you referred to who brings up their business constantly and are uber pushy. Which I just could never do.

  3. Don’t know about home-based businesses but I’ve been using essential oils since I was a teenager (in the *ahem* 90s). There is a cure for whatever ails ya. 😉 Really. Some amazing blends out there, too.
